Being able to sew is something that I think will never go out of fashion. I've been sewing since I was little - in fact, my mom made many of my costumes when I was a kid. Once I got into junior high and high school, I wanted to start sewing for myself. I've made skirts, dresses, shirts, pants, purses, facemasks, and more. While many of the sewing projects I've worked on have been a bit harder, I find that the basic knowledge of sewing with a needle and thread has saved me from many tears and popped buttons.
However, keeping all my sewing supplies in one place has proven to be quite the chore, especially with moving to college. That's why I'm excited about this project - a personal sewing kit! With only a few items, you can make your own sewing kit!
What you'll need:
Mason jar
Fabric
Stuffing
Glue gun
Colorful paper (matching or complimenting your fabric)
Pencil
Sewing notions (needles, thread, buttons, small scissors, fabric tape measure, etc.)
What to do:
Trace the lid of your mason jar on the paper and cut it out.
Cut your fabric into a 4-inch square.
Put the rim of your lid on a table or other flat work surface and lay the fabric on the top with the wrong side facing you. (Fabric has two sides - a wrong and a right side. The wrong side is the side with the less noticeable pattern. It's also considered the inside of the fabric.)
Take a small handful of stuffing and place it on top of the fabric, over the mason jar rim.
Take the lid of the mason jar and push it over the fluff and fabric, into the mason jar rim. You'll need to lift the rim during this step so your fabric and fluff bump through the top of the rim.
When your lid is secure, go ahead and glue the fabric down onto the lid.
Cover the remaining fabric and lid with the previous paper circle that you cut out. This will help hide the excess fabric.
Fill your jar with sewing notions!
I like to make sure I have the basic colors of thread - usually black and white. Often, when I get shirts or dresses that have buttons, they come with a bag that has an extra button. I combine these in my mason jar sewing kit so I know where they all are whenever I lose a button.
