SAF101: Basic Safety in the Innovation Wyrkshop

Safety first! That's what we always say.

SAF101 is the first course makers must take before any other workshop can be completed. It focuses on the basics of what makerspaces are, along with specific safety rules for the Innovation Wyrkshop in Laramie. Students will learn the basics of safety and locations for important safety tools such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency exits as well as what to do in case of an emergency. It’s the starting place for every maker, and required before using any tools or machinery in the space.

This workshop is also offered online for makers who don't wish to come in 20 minutes before or stick around 20 minutes after another workshop to review safety training.

Select a location to enroll in a workshop, resume a quiz, or reserve equipment in your local instance of the MAP.

In this course, you'll learn:

  • Defining makerspaces, makers, and maker culture

  • The mission of our makerspaces

  • How the Makerspace Access Pass (MAP) program works.

  • What you can (and can't) do in a makerspace, including: general workshop rules & policies; food, drink, and material policies; makerspace equipment policies.

  • Makerspace-specific safety rules and emergency procedures, including marked zones within our makerspaces, PPE requirements in those zones, and how to read safety cards.

  • Important safety rules & regulations

  • Emergency procedures
